NAVY JUNIOR RESERVE OFFICER TRAINING CORPS (NJROTC)

People who are successful in life, who succeed in business, industry, and education have often developed a strong sense of self-discipline, an ability to lead and motivate others, and have a well-rounded character. The Navy Junior Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) teaches you that self-disciple, self-confidence, and leadership skills to help you meet life's many challenges. NJROTC curriculum, instructors, and activities are designed to develop your skills, regardless of your career path!

More than 500,000 high school students are enrolled in over 3,500 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) programs worldwide.

The first Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps programs were established in 1916 through the National Defense Act and later expanded under federal Law in 1964. Understanding their value to education, the different service-based (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps) JROTC programs have been expanding since. In 1981, Lemon Bay High School established a NJROTC program with the help of the U.S. Navy.

There is NO military service required by participating in NJROTC! It is a high school class. NJROTC can be an alternate option to fulfill your school district 2-year HOPE class graduation requirement, all while having fun and making friends.

Many of our cadets are also in Lemon Bay varsity athletic teams, band, drama, and other interests and those other programs work with us too. We want to facilitate all of our Lemon Bay NJROTC student's opportunities! NJROTC also offers multiple teams to participate in. A few unique examples: Our orienteering, drill, color guard, and air rifle/target teams that can compete at the state and national levels!

Our program goals are to teach leadership, personal responsibility, and instill the value of citizenship. This is developed through the core values of the U.S. Navy (Honor, Courage, and Commitment). The teachers are retired military Officers and Senior Enlisted certified by both the U.S. Navy and the local school district. Our program is also run by our own students called the "Cadet Staff". Leadership roles are fulfilled in the organization by students (Cadets) in the program who are given the opportunity to demonstrate initiative, along with their desire to develop communication, peer mentoring, and leadership skills.

The NJROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship, physical fitness, and leadership skills as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals in naval operations, mariner skills, navigation, oceanography, and meteorology.
